Feeling old or feeling radiant?

Feeling old or feeling radiant?

Get through menopause with radiant skin  By : Dr. Emilie Bourgeault, BSc MD FRCPC, Dermatologist Nancy Labonte, Skin Care Specialist and Head of the Innovations Committee at IDC DERMO   Congratulations, you've weathered the menopause storm and are now entering a new chapter of your life! However, you might be experiencing the unsettling feeling of suddenly aging. You're not alone; many women notice similar changes in their skin during menopause. Nancy: What are the phases of menopause and their effects on the skin? Dr. Bourgeault: Menopause is divided into three phases: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. Skin changes during these phases are primarily due to a decrease in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone. This reduction leads to a decrease in collagen and elastin production, which affects the skin's volume, firmness, and elasticity, exacerbates deep wrinkles, and increases the risk of dryness. Additionally, the skin may appear less radiant and be more prone to pigmentation spots.   Nancy: Is this what is commonly referred to as "hormonal aging" of the skin? Dr. Bourgeault: Exactly! Hormonal aging of the skin is directly related to the body's hormonal fluctuations, mainly the decline in estrogen and progesterone levels. Unlike chronological aging, which is inevitable with age, or premature aging caused by external factors like UV exposure and pollution, hormonal aging is specific to hormonal disruptions.   Nancy: What ingredients should we prioritize to address these changes? Dr. Bourgeault: Choose a highly hydrating cream enriched with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which restore and maintain skin hydration. Target hyperpigmentation with ingredients like niacinamide (vitamin B3) to visibly even out the skin tone and reduce age spots. To stimulate collagen production, using peptides and retinol is recommended, as they enhance skin firmness and elasticity. Incorporate omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids to nourish and repair the skin, contributing to overall skin health.   IDC DERMO’s Response "As someone experiencing menopause myself, I face each morning with the duality between the image reflected in the mirror and my inner well-being. Using IDC DERMO products means offering your skin 25 years of dermocosmetic expertise and a deep understanding of hormonal changes, so you can feel confident at all times." – Nancy Labonté The ULTIME PREMIUM range, infused with the patented ReGen16 formulation protocol, stands out as the pinnacle of anti-aging skincare. Designed for postmenopausal skin, it now includes an unparalleled night cream enriched with ceramides, omega-3, -6, and -9 fatty acids, peptides, and niacinamide. This range empowers every menopausal woman to overcome her skincare challenges and reveal a complexion that reflects her strength and inner beauty.

The hyaluronic acids and peptides for the skin     By : Dr. Emilie Bourgeault, BSc MD FRCPC, Dermatologist Serge Yelle, PhD Plant Physiology, General Manager, IDC Dermo   The dynamic duo for youthful skin: hyaluronic acid and peptides. What do they do and which types should you choose? When biochemistry meets biology Hyaluronic acid and Peptides at the service of skincare   Hyaluronic Acids - Essential moisturizing factors Discovered in 1934 by Karl Meyer and John Palmer, hyaluronic acid has become a pillar of skin biochemistry. This glycosaminoglycan performs essential functions in the extracellular matrix, notably to densify and plump the skin. Often described for its ability to bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water, hyaluronic acid confers hydrating and viscoelastic properties to the skin. In the dermis, hyaluronic acid plays a structural role, contributing to the cohesion and providing support for collagen and elastin fibers, as well as other skin proteins, which together make up connective tissue. It is also involved in several cellular mechanisms, including cell differentiation and migration.   Aging affects the distribution and function of hyaluronic acid in the skin. The epidermis undergoes a marked reduction in hyaluronic acid, which reduces water retention and contributes to skin dehydration and atrophy. In the dermis, its function is altered by an increase in its affinity for other extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen and elastin, which reduces its ability to retain water, leading to loss of elasticity and reduced hydration.   Hyaluronic acid comes in several forms, each with its own specific features and cosmetic applications.  Cross-linked hyaluronic acid is a stabilized form in which the polymer chains are linked together, creating a three-dimensional network. This structure enables it to resist enzymatic and mechanical degradation in the skin for longer than non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid.   Acetylated hyaluronic acid, meanwhile, undergoes a modification to increase its water-binding capacity and make it more flexible, potentially facilitating skin penetration for topical applications.   Finally, hyaluronic acid comes in a range of molecular weights, from very low to very high. Low molecular weight molecules are known to penetrate deeper into the skin, where they can stimulate tissue repair from within. Medium-weight molecules can have anti-inflammatory and reparative effects, while high-molecular-weight molecules remain on the skin's surface, forming a moisturizing film that protects the skin barrier and reduces insensible water loss. In addition, fractionated forms of hyaluronic acid have been shown to stimulate skin repair, improve radiance and reduce wrinkle depth by binding to cell receptors such as CD44. Thus, its topical use in cosmetics not only helps to improve the skin's hydrated appearance and texture, but also plays a role in protecting it from external aggressors, thereby reducing the impact of cutaneous aging.   Peptides - Architects of the skin at the molecular level   Peptides are small amino acid polymers which, in cosmetics, act as true architects at the molecular level, modulating and renewing skin structure.   Among them, signal peptides are key players in the regeneration of skin structural proteins. By signalling or mimicking the biological processes involved in extracellular matrix synthesis, these peptides stimulate the production of essential components such as collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, glycosaminoglycans and fibronectins. Depending on their nature, peptides have a wide range of activities, including smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, regenerating skin cells, increasing elasticity and much more.   Hexapeptide-3 is a neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptide with an amino acid sequence similar to that of the SNAP-25 protein, enabling it to compete with and modulate the SNARE complex, essential for acetylcholine release. By inhibiting this release, Hexapeptide-3 reduces muscle contraction and, consequently, the appearance of expression lines. This hexapeptide is also effective in curbing the overproduction and release of catecholamine hormones, such as adrenaline, which are associated with wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements. Often cited as a non-invasive alternative to botulinum toxin, Acetyl Hexapeptide-3 is a peptide of choice in anti-aging strategies aimed at minimizing wrinkles and improving skin firmness. Centella Asiatica extract, with its high concentration of biopeptides, has been shown to have stimulating properties for maintaining skin firmness and elasticity. Mechanisms of action include stimulation of fibroblasts, leading to a marked increase in the synthesis of type I collagen, a protein essential for maintaining dermal density. It also promotes elastin production, giving skin greater elasticity. What's more, the extract helps reduce inflammation and repair skin lesions, positioning it as a key ingredient in advanced anti-aging strategies.   As such, these peptides are not just active components, but biological messengers that influence the skin's cellular processes. They represent a class of cosmetic active ingredients with enormous potential for improving skin health and appearance.   Combining different grades of hyaluronic acid, of different molecular weights and shapes, with a high concentration of peptides would enable a dermo-cosmetic care product to deliver real anti-aging benefits to the skin.       IDC PUSHES BACK THE FRONTIERS OF DERMO-COSMETICS By: Nancy Labonte, Skin Care Specialist and Head of the Innovations Committee at IDC DERMO Lionel Ripoll, PhD, Cosmetology - Department of Basic Sciences, Quebec University in Chicoutimi   BOOST Hyalu-Peptide by IDC: Innovation in Dermo-Cosmetic   IDC DERMO innovates and pushes back the frontiers of cosmetic formulation with the launch of BOOST Hyalu-Peptide, a densifying and plumping serum.  IDC fuses 13 types and grades of hyaluronic acid with a complex of over 400 peptides, offering a complete skin care formula.   Each type of hyaluronic acid in BOOST Hyalu-Peptide plays a crucial role, working synergistically to provide a comprehensive approach to reducing the signs of aging and improving overall skin texture. The use of a blend of hyaluronic acid forms optimizes skin density and health by acting on different levels of the skin, guaranteeing intense, long-lasting hydration. The higher molecular weights create a protective film on the skin's surface, reducing water loss, while the lower molecular weights act synergistically and penetrate deeper into the skin, offering improved elasticity and skin revitalization.   These 13 grades and forms of hyaluronic acid make this concentrated serum an important tool in the quest for hyaluronic skin health.  But BOOST Hyalu-Peptide's innovation doesn't stop at hyaluronic acids.  It also lies in the synergistic use of peptides to create a unique and innovative anti-aging cosmetic product. These peptides, incorporated into the serum at clinically proven concentrations, offer an innovative approach to skin care, acting not only on hydration, but also on skin structure and resilience.   These unrivalled concentrations and varieties of hyaluronic acid and peptides make BOOST Hyalu-Peptide the perfect addition to any skincare routine, to densify and plump skin on the face, neck and around the eyes.

Winter hydration: understanding and protecting our skin.

Winter hydration: understanding and protecting our skin.

By : Dr. Emilie Bourgeault Emilie Bourgeault, BSc MD FRCPC, Dermatologist Serge Yelle, PhD Plant Physiology, General Manager, IDC Dermo Lionel Ripoll, PhD, Cosmetology - Department of Basic Sciences Université du Québec à Chicoutimi   Why is winter so hard on our skin? How can we help it cope with the impressive number of aggressions and changes that winter brings? It starts with understanding what it has to face, every day and every winter. IDC DERMO works with experts to better understand skin and its reality. Winter in Quebec is marked by a significant drop in temperature and humidity, two factors that have a considerable influence on our skin. The drop in temperature brings with it a reduction in ambient humidity. These drops have a direct impact on the skin's ability to retain water.  Normally, the skin's outermost layer, the stratum corneum, acts as a barrier against moisture loss. It's made up of tightly-bound corneocytes and surrounded by natural lipids, which help keep the skin hydrated. In winter, this barrier is weakened by dry air, leading to an increase in insensible water loss (IWL). IWL is a natural process whereby water evaporates from the skin's surface, but when accelerated, it leads to dehydration and reduced skin elasticity. This dehydration is not just a surface problem. It affects the function of deeper skin cells, particularly keratinocytes. These cells are essential for maintaining the skin's structural integrity and barrier function. Under the influence of dry air, keratinocytes undergo osmotic stress, which affects their ability to divide and renew themselves properly. Furthermore, the icy wind and sub-zero temperatures that characterize Quebec winters significantly disrupt the skin's lipid layer. This fine armor preserves moisture and protects against external aggressors. Skin lipids, mainly ceramides, cholesterol and essential fatty acids, form the intercellular matrix of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the skin. They play a fundamental role in retaining water and maintaining the skin's flexibility and integrity.  Exposure to cold causes vasoconstriction, a reduction in blood flow to the skin's surface, limiting the supply of nutrients and oxygen. This natural bodily reaction, designed to preserve body heat, can compromise skin lipid synthesis and the skin's ability to protect itself against external aggressors. As a result, skin can become more sensitive and fragile.   Low temperatures also affect the composition of skin lipids, making fatty acids more saturated and less fluid, which can disrupt barrier function, skin homeostasis and nutrient transport. In addition, the dry, cold environment disrupts the activity of enzymes responsible for the skin's natural desquamation, leading to rough, dull skin.   Wind, meanwhile, acts as a catalyst for evaporation, increasing insensible water loss (IWL). This accelerated evaporation can dehydrate the skin and exacerbate the deterioration of surface lipids, leading to skin problems such as dryness, flaking and sometimes even atopic dermatitis. In addition, the wind can carry pollutants and allergens which, by attacking a weakened skin barrier, can induce inflammatory reactions and accentuate skin sensitivity.   Prolonged exposure to the cold can deplete the skin's defenses, repair and renewal functions. The use of cosmetic products enriched with skin-identical lipids, such as ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol, can help restore the lipid barrier. This underlines the importance of supporting the skin with external care strategies. The application of protective and nourishing creams can complement and reinforce the skin's intrinsic defenses, and lead it to reactivate the 3 mechanisms involved in skin hydration: the creation, diffusion and retention of water molecules.   In conclusion, changes in temperature and humidity in winter represent a considerable challenge for the skin. These environmental changes lead to disruption of the skin barrier, increased moisture loss, and an impact on the skin's cellular and molecular regulation. Supplementing your skin with skincare products is one way to regain control and help your skin get through these harsh months. IDC AT THE SERVICE OF SKIN HYDRATION By Nancy Labonté - Skin Care and Cosmetics Specialist at IDC DERMO Lionel Ripoll, PhD, Cosmetology - Department of Basic Sciences Université du Québec à Chicoutimi   At IDC DERMO, our formulations contain innovative ingredients carefully selected to offer optimal hydration and protect the skin against the aggressions of the cold. IDC moisturizers are developed, tested and manufactured under dermatological control, and are recognized for reactivating the creation, retention and diffusion of water molecules in the skin, throughout the different layers of the epidermis. In addition to ceramides, essential fatty acids and cholesterol, which are essential ingredients for skin health and hydration, and are used by IDC DERMO, other ingredients are used to offer greater benefits, results and health to the skin. Here are some of these ingredients. Providing the skin with a good supply of moisture via our choice of serums and creams can make a big difference to how our skin performs in winter. AcquaCell: A natural moisturizing complex combining water, glycerine and antioxidant-rich fruit extracts such as watermelon, apple and lentil. These extracts, combined with sodium lactate and sodium PCA, work synergistically to increase skin's immediate hydration and reinforce water retention within the epidermal layers. By helping to reduce IAP, Acquacell helps maintain skin's suppleness and resilience in winter conditions.   Hyaluronic acid: A powerful moisturizing agent capable of retaining up to 1000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid binds to water in the skin's layers, limiting IOP. It forms a hydrating barrier on the skin's surface that prevents moisture loss due to wind and cold, while smoothing fine lines caused by dryness.   Pentavitin: A saccharide complex that firmly attaches to the skin's keratin and maintains hydration. By targeting the upper layers of the epidermis, PENTAVITIN® reinforces the skin's barrier function and helps preserve the integrity of cutaneous lipids, essential for defending against low temperatures and wind.   Lipobelle Glacier: encapsulates glacier water in lecithin liposomes, enabling deep penetration and moisture delivery to the lower layers of the epidermis. This advanced delivery system ensures that moisture is delivered where it's needed most, while protecting skin from thermal stress, preserving elasticity and barrier function. Jojoba extract: Jojoba extract mimics the skin's natural lipids, offering superior protection and repair of lipid membranes damaged by cold. By integrating with the skin's lipid barrier, it helps to regulate hydration and prevent moisture loss, while offering a soothing, softening effect that is particularly beneficial in cold climates.   These ingredients are just a few examples of the complexity and uniqueness of IDC DERMO formulations. Together with essential fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol, these ingredients work in harmony to provide skin with complete hydration, from the surface to the deepest layers. Supplying the skin with moisturizing ingredients goes beyond providing water and comfort. A dermocosmetic moisturizer formulated with key ingredients and dermatologically tested will reinforce the skin's barrier and elasticity, while increasing cellular renewal and the skin's defense and repair functions. Choosing an IDC DERMO moisturizer means offering real results, without compromise.

ELLE Qc/ELLE Canada Award - Winner for a 3rd consecutive year!

ELLE Qc/ELLE Canada Award - Winner for a 3rd consecutive year!

Le Grand Prix de la beauté ELLE Québec/ELLE Canada 2023 ! It's noon on October 11th, 2023. We are leaving the IDC DERMO headquarters in Quebec City for Montreal. The three of us are Samuelle, Communications and Marketing Coordinator, Frédérique, Sales Marketing Manager, and Nancy Labonté, Skin Care and Cosmetics Specialist. We're on our way to see Cécile, the Marketing Director, who lives in the city. We're all excited, on our way to a great evening: the Grands Prix de la Beauté 2023 Gala. Would we have the great honor of winning one of these prestigious awards again this year? You have to submit the product(s) you want to present at the beginning of the year, and then you go to the gala in October not knowing if your product has been selected as a finalist. That's part of the excitement! During these months, Elle Québec and Elle Canada magazines work hard to test hundreds of products. In fact, 600 jurors (men and women) across Canada blindly test the best products in the beauty industry and vote for their favorites. These judges are randomly selected from thousands of consumers who submit their entries. Each judge receives disguised beauty products. It is impossible for the judges to know which products they are using. They have 11 weeks to test and evaluate these products using an online diary. The products with the highest average score will be crowned overall winners in their category. In short, when the category in which we had submitted our product appeared on the screen, I said to myself, "If we're finalists, that's already a victory! Over the microphone we hear, "And the finalists are: IDC Dermo's 16-in-1 EXPRESS Multi-Action Global Anti-Aging Cream." I kind of lost track of who the 2nd finalist was, all I could think of was "Ah well, we want to win!"."And the big winner in 2023 is IDC DERMO. "I felt the whole of Quebec shouting with us. Because yes, making 100% Quebec cosmetics that compete, and win, against the best international brands, well, we have something to celebrate. And this year, we're celebrating in triplicate, as this cream wins the Grand Prix de la Beauté Elle Québec/Elle Canada for a 3rd consecutive year, no less!   Let me introduce you to, or represent, this gem of a product.  In cosmetics, when we talk about "all-in-one" creams, we often think that concessions have to be made to offer a product with multiple actions. A single product certainly can't meet all our skin's needs. Well, now it can.IDC redefines what an all-in-one skincare product should be: a cream that combines an anti-aging serum with an anti-pollution moisturizer. A cream that can be used as a night cream and a day cream, and applied to the face, eye contour and neck. That's what EXPRESS Multi-Action offers. A single product that replaces 7 and a unique formulation that simultaneously targets the 16 causes of skin aging, thanks to our REGEN(16). This 16-in-1 global anti-aging cream is formulated according to a unique methodology patented by IDC DERMO: an approach and know-how that targets all the signs of cutaneous aging and dehydrated skin on the face, neck and eye contour. Its formulation incorporates highly active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, anti-aging plant extracts and organic essential fatty acids. This silky, melting cream simultaneously targets fine lines & wrinkles, loss of firmness, pigmentation spots, hydration, redness, puffiness and dark circles. In a clinical test, 93% of women found their skin smoother and more beautiful in just 4 weeks. It's easy to see why this product stands out on every level, even when tested blind! In short, on October 11, it was with a heart full of pride and a head full of new memories that we left this beautiful evening. Thank you to Elle Québec/Elle Canada for allowing so many products and companies to be known and recognized not for their marketing and promotional campaigns, but rather for what should always be at the root of all products: their effectiveness and the happiness they bring to consumers.

When does my skin menopause start?

When does my skin menopause start?

Here's a quick and easy questionnaire to help me identify which stage of menopause I'm in and which skincare range to use. Even if it's not the "sexiest" subject, menopause and its various stages seem to be a subject that's being put forward more and more, at last. I say "finally" because it needs to be talked about. Canadian women will spend on average up to half their lives in the menopause phase, and this "menopausal life" brings with it its share of changes. Much is said and said about the first phase of a woman's life, but she is left to discover and believe the various myths and popular beliefs of previous generations about the second phase of her life. The menopause is in fact a period of hormonal transition that can last several years and is accompanied by numerous bodily changes, including to the skin. Little is said about what the phases of menopause can do to the skin. Putting the spotlight on "cutaneous menopause" will enable women to better understand the changes and needs of their skin.   The menopause is generally divided into three stages: perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause. All these stages have one thing in common: hormonal imbalances. It's at this point that we're faced with a new reality: hormonal aging of the skin. Perimenopause is the period immediately preceding menopause, and can begin several years before its arrival. During this period, hormone levels fluctuate and can cause symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings and sleep disturbances. As far as the skin is concerned, perimenopause can lead to a reduction in skin elasticity and firmness, as well as increased dehydration and dryness. We may also notice that our skin type changes. For example, combination skin becomes dry, while normal skin becomes oily. Once menopause is reached, which is designated by the complete cessation of the menstrual cycle, estrogen levels drop considerably, activating skin aging. Skin becomes thinner and more fragile, and the appearance of wrinkles increases. In addition, collagen production declines considerably, which can lead to a loss of firmness and sagging of the skin. Facial contours are less well defined, and the skin seems to give in to gravity.   Once menopause has passed, we enter the post-menopausal phase. Menopausal symptoms may lessen at this stage, but hormonal changes continue to affect the skin. The drastic drop in estrogen levels leads to a reduction in sebum production, making the skin very dry, dehydrated, uncomfortable and more prone to irritation. The skin's metabolism slows down considerably, the complexion becomes dull and grey, and the reduced production of collagen and elastin leads to a loss of volume and elasticity and an increase in deeper wrinkles. All these signs can make a post-menopausal woman's face look severe and tired, without actually being so. Each phase of menopause comes with different needs for the skin. Recognizing which phase you're in is essential to selecting the right skin care and cosmetics routine for your skin. IDC DERMO's ULTIME and ULTIME PREMIUM ranges are ideal for perimenopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal skin. It's important to note that every woman experiences menopause in a unique way, and the effects on the skin can vary from one person to another. Some may experience more pronounced changes, while others may not notice any significant difference. Here are six quick and easy questions to help you identify which phase you seem to be in, and which range of 100% Québec IDC DERMO skincare products your skin may need. 1. Good skin nutrition is essential if you want to give your skin all the tools it needs to maintain and regain its balance and health, despite all the hormonal changes it undergoes.

ULTIME Premium media launch event

ULTIME Premium media launch event

On the occasion of the launch of the ULTIME PREMIUM range, IDC Dermo had the pleasure of visiting the Rockland Centre in Montreal on March 17 for the launch media event. The aim of the event was to enrich the editors' knowledge of this period of life. Three experts were on hand to offer solutions for post-menopausal women. First, Nancy Labonté, skin care and cosmetics specialist at IDC Dermo, presented the new ULTIME PREMIUM range. Next, Bruno Rhéaume, professional make-up artist, gave make-up tips for mature skin on a model. Finally, Iris Setlakwe, fashion designer and founder of the Iris Setlakwe brand, discussed styles and silhouettes for women aged 60 and over.     Bruno Rhéaume's tips for successful make-up after menopause     The menopause brings with it psychological upheavals that can affect the way we perceive ourselves, but certain physical changes also diminish our self-confidence. It's important to modify our daily routine to adapt it to our new reality, since the idea is not to transform ourselves into someone else, but to make life easier.During and after menopause, women have to cope with certain physical symptoms such as hot flushes. In the post-menopausal period, however, hot flashes can persist. The drop in estrogen levels leads to a reduction in collagen and elastin production, creating an imbalance between male and female hormones. The result? The result can be very dry skin, a flare-up of acne and even the appearance of hairs on the chin. So it's important to adapt your skincare routine before tackling make-up. Choosing the right creams to moisturize your face is crucial. Avoid creams that are too rich and can leave the skin shiny.Skin has changed, and we realize that we've been wearing the same kind of make-up since our twenties. It's time to learn new tricks and keep up with the times. I recommend consulting a professional make-up artist to modify your make-up routine. 1. It's best to avoid shiny, glossy make-up, which gives the appearance of oily skin when you sweat more. 2. Opt for natural make-up. The healthy-glow effect rejuvenates and illuminates the face. By using earthy colors for make-up, you won't go wrong. 3. No heavy foundation or plastered faces. 4. We choose products that are easy to use, so that our beauty routine is quick and effective. Make-up should take no more than 15 minutes to apply. 5. If you have downy hair, choose a very thin liquid foundation to avoid a textured look. It's important to remember that not the whole face needs foundation, and that it can be applied in a targeted way. The more products you add to your skin, the more textured it becomes, making it look older. THREE MUST-HAVE PRODUCTS The 3 most important make-up products are radiance (illuminator), foundation and powder. Their formula must be micro-fine to prevent texture build-up on the face. Plan a generous budget and opt for quality products for these 3 essentials. TIPS TO MAXIMIZE MAKEUP HOLD To mattify the complexion, sweat is first blotted off with absorbent sheets.Apply a hairspray at the very end of make-up application to make it last longer.Take along a spray bottle, essential for cooling off. STEPS TO SUCCESSFUL MAKE-UP 1. Touch radiance (illuminator) on and under the eye to reduce dark circles. 2. Liquid foundation in small dabs. 3. Micro-fine powder (HD) to set radiance and foundation. 4. Eyebrow pencil to enhance eyes. 5. Dark brown and cream eyeshadow for depth. 6. Essential black mascara on upper lashes. 7. Satin blush applied to domed cheekbone. 8. Lip gloss applied to mouth with fingers. 9. Mist over entire face to hold make-up. 5 tips from Iris Setlakwe to dress her changing figure   1. HIGHLIGHT YOUR ASSETS "For example, on a tall person with a small waist, we'll emphasize the waist. For a short, curvaceous woman, we'll work on length, opting for shorter skirts (5 to 8 cm above the knee) and shorter jackets. The same goes for pants: a slim 7/8 length is flattering and elongates the silhouette. If you've got a big belly, I advise you not to wear your top inside your pants, opting instead for a loose blouse in a wispy fabric. A tall woman will be able to match her long blouse with wide-leg pants, while a petite woman will pair it with narrow pants." 2. IT'S JUST A NUMBER "Stop trying to wear the same size garment forever! Stop looking at the number on the label and opt instead for pieces that match your figure. This is the best way to enhance your body. And don't be afraid to try new cuts and proportions. Important detail: wear pretty shoes to try on clothes, rather than sneakers. Last but not least, postpone your shopping trip if you're in low spirits!" 3. OPT FOR COLOR "Many women adopt black as they age, which can make them look rather severe. I prefer navy, which is softer. It's important to choose colors that are flattering for the complexion, but also colors that are easy to match with the pieces you already own. A base of black, navy or beige makes it easy to include new shades." 4. HIDE THIS ARM "Because of the loss of firmness, women are sensitive about their arms. I offer short leather jackets and lightweight knit cardigans that are easy to layer. I've also created a slightly shouldered t-shirt (with small shoulder pads) that balances the silhouette. As for dresses, I offer a selection of short-sleeved dresses and I work the cuts so that the shoulders are not too wide. We all want a beautiful look without looking like a madam!" 5. DRESS YOUR NEW CURVES "The waist and hips tend to gain volume during and after menopause. I dress women with generous curves very well, unlike some European brands that offer cuts that are often a little masculine. I pay particular attention to pants, whatever the size, from 0 to 16, so that the customer feels good in her body and in my clothes. In addition to the hips, you also have to think about the waist. For example, if you've got a big belly, you don't need a high waist, which will highlight a small waist. For a woman with full hips, avoid pants with pleats, which emphasize curves at the waist and hips."

Natural cosmetics without concessions

Natural cosmetics without concessions

Is it possible to have a natural cosmetic treatment that's effective and pleasant to use? Yes, but not easy. Cosmetics manufacturers often have to make concessions to achieve a product that complies with natural skincare guidelines. Product texture, efficacy, smell and/or shelf life are all factors that are sometimes affected by natural certifications. Add another layer of complexity if, in addition, you want to formulate a natural skincare product that is also vegan. Natural or vegan: what's the difference? It's important to know that it's possible to be "natural" without being "vegan". A natural cosmetic product is a skincare product made from natural ingredients, i.e. ingredients derived from nature. These ingredients can be of plant, mineral or animal origin. On the other hand, a "vegan" certified cosmetic product means that it has been manufactured without animal ingredients or by-products, uses no animal ingredients or by-products in the manufacturing process, and is not tested on animals. In short, a product can be "natural" without being "vegan", or conversely, "vegan" without being "natural". If you're looking for a skincare product that respects both of these characteristics, it's important to make sure that the product you're looking for has real certifications that confirm that the formulation complies with the requirements and strict specifications they entail. What are the limits of natural and vegan skincare? Creating and formulating an anti-aging cosmetic cream that complies with "vegan" and "natural" certifications, while being truly effective and offering a pleasant-to-use, fragrance-free skin care product, is anything but simple and easy. Many companies have to make concessions on product efficacy, texture, formulation, certifications and/or stability. That's why IDC DERMO waited before joining the natural anti-aging industry. THE IDC DERMO APPROACH At IDC DERMO, a line of skincare products 100% designed and manufactured right here in Quebec, the anti-aging claim comes with REGEN(16), a unique, patented technology that regenerates the skin on all 16 causes of skin aging, simultaneously. Smile, you're in post-menopause

Smile, you're in post-menopause

Ladies, did you know that we spend a third of our lives in post-menopause? So, let's get through this period with serenity and positivity, with a big smile on our faces! In Canada, almost one woman out of two is going through menopause. Fortunately, the topic is becoming less stigmatized and women now dare to talk about it without shame. Educating ourselves to better understand these changes, improving our lifestyle and adapting our beauty routine will allow us to feel beautiful and in shape at any age!   My experience with menopause    The average age of menopause is 51. In my case, it came earlier, in my forties, following a hysterectomy due to a large fibroid. So, I've been in post-menopause for a few years now. Some of my symptoms have disappeared: my weight has stabilized, I said goodbye to hot flashes, I sleep better and I have regained my legendary good mood (!).     My post-menopausal skin   However, other symptoms are getting worse: the appearance of grey hair and skin aging are accelerating at a dizzying pace. My skin is dry and dehydrated, which gives it a crumpled appearance. I often feel discomfort: it pulls and itches. I notice deepening wrinkles, more visible pigment spots, a dull, gray complexion, rosacea on my cheeks and chin, loss of elasticity and the emergence of jowls. In fact, in addition to the metabolism and cell renewal that slow down during the five years following menopause, our skin loses 30 % of its collagen and is deficient in calcium, which makes it fragile and reactive. Today, to remedy this situation, I am looking for skin care products that provide comfort and radiance to my skin so that I can look good!   DISCOVER ULTIME PREMIUM BY NANCY LABONTÉSKIN CARE AND COSMETICS SPECIALIST  « Post-menopausal skin needs instant nourishment and radiance because it is tired, dry and weakened by a chronic hormonal deficit.  These changes sometimes make the face look sad and severe, while these women, on the contrary, appreciate, accept and are filled with gratitude for this new stage of their lives. Their cosmetic care must understand and respond to these new needs. These new realities are at the heart of IDC DERMO's research and development of their new products, ULTIME Premium Day and ULTIME Premium Eye; two skincare products for post-menopausal skin that incorporate unique ingredient technologies, namely REGEN(16) and the S.M.I.L.E. Complex, rich in ingredients such as calcium and caffeine. »    MY OPINION ON ULTIME PREMIUM ULTIME PREMIUM In the elegant little jars, there are two creamy products, with gourmet textures that melt on the skin. The ULTIME PREMIUM DAY is an intensive replenishing sublimating cream that works to deeply moisturize and nourish the skin. It is formulated with key ingredients, such as calcium, Phyto-Retinol and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, that help restore the skin barrier and stimulate collagen production. The squeeze button on the ULTIME PREMIUM DAY bottle dispenses the perfect amount of intensive restorative sublimating cream. Its fruity fragrance and almond-pink color awaken our skin from the very first application; its blurring effect smoothes fine lines (like a makeup base) and its reflective pigments give our complexion a gorgeous glow. The cream is super comfortable and leaves the skin soft and well hydrated all day long.   The illuminating and replenishing ULTIME PREMIUM EYES cream is an instant awakener thanks to its iridescent pale pink pigments that fade dark circles and give an immediate lifting effect. The cream is also enriched with caffeine, Phyto-Retinol and mini hyaluronic acid. I love the firming and draining effect that reduces the appearance of crow's feet.  All in all, these products give my skin a real boost and make it look radiant and glowing. And that's all I want: to look happy and healthy! Life is good, let’s smile girlfriends!

How to regain control of our skin at menopause?

How to regain control of our skin at menopause?

Menopause and premenopause (the period before menopause), bring considerable changes to a woman’s body. One of the principal consequences of these changes is a hormonal imbalance that has many undesirable effects, among which, the accelerated rate of skin aging. To help you better navigate these stages of life, the IDC Dermo team has devoted its research to the impact of menopause on skin and the existing solutions to help your skin be healthier.   What are the effects of menopause on the skin?  The hormonal changes caused by menopause have an effect on skin at many levels. Firstly, it is important to know that an increase in androgen and a decrease in estrogen, and DHEA, called the youth hormone, occur at these stages. This imbalance is the cause of a thinning of the upper layer of the skin, more pronounced dark spots and skin’s dehydration. A loss of elasticity and firmness brought on by the drastic decrease in collagen production is also observed. The neck, cheekbones, eye contour and jaw all have a thinner layer of skin, and that is where the signs of aging are quickly more noticeable. Gravity also plays a role in this unfortunate reality.  The right actions to prevent skin aging  Although we would all like to keep the luminous and plump skin we had in our 20s, we can’t fight against the test of time. We can however slow the accelerated skin aging caused by hormone fluctuations related to menopause by using the right ingredients and products. Thus, balanced cosmetic nourishment is more than ever key when premenopause and menopause set in. The use of anti-aging products formulated with REGEN(16) helps to stimulate skin’s pro-youth mechanisms while also slowing skin aging mechanisms. Our experts agree that the following steps are to be followed and integrated to our skin regimen:     1. CLEANSING At this crucial stage in your life, it is important to use a makeup remover that will protect skin’s hydrolipidic barrier. Cleansing skin and removing makeup without drying it out by using PURE Milk. The micelle action leaves skin soft and supple, and hydrated and soothed without feeling tight. To be used on face, neck, lips and eye area.      2. EXFOLIATING During menopause, we must help our metabolism and stimulate cell renewal by using an exfoliant that will get rid of dead skin and other waste. This single action will allow your products to effectively be absorbed by your skin. Our PURE Mask exfoliant combines three types of professional exfoliation products (enzymatic, mechanical and fruit acid peeling), for an incomparable effect of renewed skin while also bringing instantly brighter skin.     3. HYDRATING Skin hydration is of vital importance during pre-menopause and menopause because skin gradually loses its ability to retain, diffuse and create its lipids and aqueous network. We must thus rely on products that offer a rich texture and are made of highly nourishing ingredients that will bring suppleness while also regenerating and redensifying the skin on your face, eye contour and neck.      4. IN-DEPTH NOURISHING Several nights a week, we can offer our skin a veritable youth cure by using ultra concentrated care that will significantly enhance the effects of our day and night creams. Our ULTIME Oil Serum is perfect for use with your regular cream. As sleep problems are frequent in these times of great change, these also have a negative effect on your skin’s condition. Our ULTIME Supreme Sleep Mask acts as a true sleep cure. You are promised to have softer, appeased and rested skin in the morning.     5. TREATING  For areas where skin is more sensitive like the eye contour, targeted products are to be used such as our restructuring and lifting cream ULTIME Eyes. As for expression wrinkles, use targeted care, our concentrated and resurfacing anti-wrinkle serum BOOST Retinol Pro, two potent weapons to smooth skin. To treat dark spots, add our veritable concentrated radiance and dark spot BOOST Vitamin C Pro serum to your beauty care kit.       6. PROTECTING It is a well-known fact that UV rays and pollution are factors that amplify premature skin aging. It is thus vital to use UV protection every day, even in the wintertime! Our SOLIS+ suncare products, that are 100% mineral-based, are your best allies to protect your skin all while fighting the appearance of wrinkles, spots and redness.      Shop all our skin care for skin in menopose!

Retinol in the spotlight

Retinol in the spotlight

When it comes to cosmetic formulations, some ingredients tend to be recurring, and thus, catch our attention. We even sometimes wonder if these ingredients, that are promoted through considerably large marketing budgets, should garner all of this attention and if their efficiency is truly based in fact.  Let us reassure you, retinol has proven qualities and deserves the highest of honors! Indeed, retinol is part of those ingredients that appear in our cosmetic products and have been discussed behind the scenes at cosmetic product companies… for over 30 years now!  Retinol is not the newest and latest in cosmetics. This proven ingredient has paved the way for so many other cosmetic ingredients throughout the years. It has adapted to changing needs while demonstrating its undoubted efficiency and versatility.    So, what is retinol and what are its skin benefits?  Retinol is derived from vitamin A and offers a long list of advantages that make it a prize ingredient in skin care.  Retinol acts as both an anti-aging and an anti-imperfection ingredient for the skin. What’s more, vitamin A is a key ingredient in activating skin cells’ restorative and regenerative capacities. This ingredient’s proven efficiency has been demonstrated, through a great number of clinical studies, to decrease the appearance of wrinkles and other imperfections such as spots, pores and scars, while also improving skin’s firmness and brightness. It activates skin cell renewal up to six times more than its normal rate and stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which allows skin to maintain its density. Furthermore, it protects skin from the effects of free radicals, which are the main culprits in premature skin aging.  Known as the cosmetic ingredient that is probably the most complete and efficient in anti-aging on the market, why is it not in all products and used in higher doses? This ingredient is unfortunately known to cause skin irritation, especially if it is not carefully integrated to one’s skin regimen. In addition, it requires specific cosmetic expertise in the formulation process to retain its integrity.    How does one bring the advantages of retinol to their skin, while minimizing its drawbacks?  The secret resides in the synergy of the ingredients used in the formulation and the professional dermo-cosmetic expertise involved in properly integrating it to a skincare routine!     1- THE SYNERGY OF THE INGREDIENTS  Developed by our researchers, our Retinol Complex’s principal relies on certain key ingredients that are recognized for increasing retinol’s efficiency while others diminish its side effects.    In recent years, a new class of cosmetic ingredients has become present: phyto-retinols. As 100% natural ingredients, they compare to retinol in their efficiency in fighting the signs of time and are known to be gentle to the skin and well-tolerated by sensitive skin: Bakuchiol is one example. This natural antioxidant comes from the psoralea corylifolia plant. Another phyto-retinol that is relatively new and offers an interesting profile, is a purified natural biopeptide that is extracted from cranberries, and comes from a verified, traceable and sustainable source in the province of Québec. These two phyto-retinols add to the retinol’s efficiency and are tolerated by even the most sensitive skin.  Making sure your skin reacts well to your retinol product is as important as its efficiency. Our serum’s formulation has been created specifically to integrate natural ingredients that are recognized for minimizing reactions like redness and irritation. This includes shea butter and bisabolol that enable the skin to benefit from all the advantages of retinol while also minimizing its side effects.    2- PROFESSIONAL DERMO-COSMETIC EXPERTISE TO CORRECTLY INTEGRATE RETINOL TO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE   In addition to your product’s formulation which must contain the proper ingredients and pure retinol dosage, the technique and time of application of your serum are to be carefully carried out.  Ideally, use the BOOST Retinol Pro serum at night, on cleansed and dried skin, avoiding the eye area. Applying an eye contour care product before the retinol serum brings protection to the sensitive eye area. For sensitive skin, start by applying your retinol once of twice a week to determine your skin’s tolerance level. Apply a hydrating cream after your retinol serum and if the retinol application causes redness, mix it with your usual hydrating cream.  There are many tips and recommendations to integrate retinol serum for everyone to benefit from its properties. For instance, some combinations of ingredients are to be avoided with retinol (do not mix retinol with exfoliating acids such as AHA/BHA) and it is important to use sun protection every day because retinol makes skin photosensitive.    IDC Dermo has that rare, unique expertise that combines the understanding of the skin aging process with deep, extensive knowledge of cosmetic ingredients. This perfect blend of knowledge and application brings you a specialized serum that is in a class of its own in the retinol-based skincare market.

Vitamin C as in cosmetics!

Vitamin C as in cosmetics!

Vitamin C is often associated with citrus fruits, summer and health! It is true that many fruits and vegetables do contain it and that a daily dose of vitamin C contributes, among others things, to a healthy immune system while helping the body’s antioxidant defenses. But is vitamin C also good for the skin, and if so, does using it in cosmetic care formulated with vitamin C bring added benefits?  Yes, and, yes! Eating a diet rich in vitamin C does not make up for our skin’s need for this versatile and highly coveted vitamin in cosmetic care.  A vitamin C serum can help to decrease premature skin aging problems, such as skin spots, dull skin, loss of firmness and the build-up wrinkles and fine lines. Vitamin C’s benefits include the decreased production of melanine which is the cause of dark spots, the stimulation of collagen production and the neutralization of free radicals. Using a balanced and stabilized vitamin C serum daily, in the right concentration, enables the skin to get the most of all the advantages of this potent ingredient.  In conclusion, vitamin C acts as a brightener and antioxidant, two very coveted effects if you are seeking healthy skin and a luminous and even complexion.    But which type of vitamin C must we seek and in which concentration?   It is important to select the etherified form of vitamin C (Ethyl Ascorbic Acid). Indeed, this form of vitamin C remains active in heat and light, and tests demonstrate that it offers good penetration, conversion, photoprotection and effects on collagen and pigmentation. This form of the vitamin is directly metabolized by the skin into pure vitamin C, thus ensuring optimal efficiency, which is not the case with the common form of vitamin C. Unlike many other vitamin C molecules, the one used in our BOOST Vitamin C Pro retains its properties and efficiency under long-term use. As a pure and boosted molecule that is 8 times more efficient than standard vitamin C, this product remains unaltered in color, odor and potency.   As for the proper concentration to be used, it is important to know that for a vitamin C serum to efficiently penetrate the skin and render the desired benefits, it must hold a concentration of 10 to 20% vitamin C. IDC Dermo’s vitamin C grade is a 20% concentration.    What is our Vitamin C Complex?   It is possible to bring a cosmetic formulation to an even greater level of efficiency by combining it with other key ingredients. That is why we have formulated our Vitamin C Complex as a combination of 3 other complementary and synergetic ingredients with vitamin C:  + Niacinamide (vitamin B3): This ingredient boosts skin hydration and fights the visible signs of aging. It also decreases skin discolouration, redness, irritation and inflammation. Vitamin B3 is also known to increase the effectiveness of vitamin C.  + Hyaluronic acid: This molecule, which occurs naturally in the body, hydrates and plumps the skin to improve its elasticity and tone. The result is smoother, visibly younger-looking skin.  + Vitamin E: When combined with vitamin C, vitamin E is four times more effective. The protective and corrective properties of both molecules are multiplied to optimize effectiveness.    The key element to remember is that like our body, our skin needs vitamin C. Vitamin C skin deficiencies are common and caused by our hectic lifestyles, pollution, a diet poor in vitamins, the sun and other sources of stress. You can fight this unfortunate reality by using our BOOST Vitamin C Pro to illuminate, brighten and even out your skin for a youthful look.

A Québec patent in anti-aging dermocosmetics

A Québec patent in anti-aging dermocosmetics

REGEN(16), the only technology targeting 16 causes of skin aging   Did you know our skin is the body’s largest organ, covering a total of 1.8 square meters and weighing about 11 kilograms? Impressive, right? It is even more impressive to study the functions of your skin, such as protection, insulation, thermoregulation, controlling evaporation and impermeability, to only name a few. Our skin must also manage several mechanisms linked to its aging and some chronological changes it must face.      WHEN SCIENCE SERVES BEAUTY   Identifying the 16 causes of skin aging has certainly been the IDC Dermo international team of researchers’ greatest discovery. As early as the age of 20, skin goes though a disruption on 16 levels, which are the cause of all skin aging signs. It is thus based on this knowledge (skin disruption on 16 levels) that IDC Dermo’s complete line of anti-aging products was developed. After 5 years of research, REGEN(16) – a technological concentrate proprietary to IDC Dermo – alone, targets, skin’s balance on 16 levels. REGEN(16) is in fact a complex of effective cosmetic ingredients that are safe and complementary, with proven results based on clinical studies. Using this unique technology, IDC Dermo treats all signs related to skin aging.    THE 16 MECHANISMS OF SKIN AGING   What are these 16 mechanisms and how do they react to the passing years and factors responsible for skin’s premature aging such as sun exposure, ozone, pollution and lifestyles (sleeping habits, smoking, exercise, nutrition and the use of some medications).  As shown in the chart below where all 16 mechanisms are indicated, some of these must be stimulated while others must be inhibited.     A GLOBAL APPROACH TO FIGHT THE SIGNS OF SKIN AGING   An effective anti-aging treatment must be designed to bring back skin’s original balance for all 16 main mechanisms related to aging. That is exactly what REGEN(16) gives to your skin! Solely acting on one or two of the mechanisms could be insufficient in the long term to take control of the skin’s negative feedbacks that tend to stay with age.  The use of REGEN(16)-formulated anti-aging skin care stimulates skin’s pro-youth mechanisms while also decreasing the mechanisms that activate skin aging, exactly as shown in the above chart. Practicing a skin regimen incorporating multi-action products thus acts to simultaneously diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, puffiness, dark circles, pores, dark spots, redness, and this, all while increasing the quality of skin tone, firmness and elasticity, along with the vitality and radiance of the complexion.  Selecting cosmetic skin care that you use morning and night is a lot more important than you would think. Your skin is nourished by the ingredients you give it through topical application. Using a single IDC Dermo anti-aging product formulated with REGEN(16) in the morning and at night is sufficient to provide balance, health, youth and well-being!  Shop our skin care products that contains REGEN(16)

As I firmly believe in the power of banding together, I hope that by standing united with organizations working to protect women and children, and using a common voice, we can make a palpable difference in our society.
